P003 → Can Lis

Jørn Utzon

Completed in 1971, Can Lis is Jørn Utzon's masterful coastal residence in Mallorca, composed of four separate blocks built from local marés sandstone that blend seamlessly into the clifftop landscape. The sequential blocks —housing kitchen and dining, living room, bedrooms, and guest suite respectively— are connected by walls and courtyards, each oriented slightly differently to follow the cliff's edge and optimise Mediterranean views. The house's distinctive features include stone furniture carved in situ, deeply recessed windows mounted on the exterior walls to manipulate light, and Chinese-inspired gables topped with yellow tiles, creating what architectural historian Richard Weston deemed "one of the finest houses built in the twentieth century."
